Music 101 is developed to increase the understanding of the music business for those interested in pursuing a career in the industry. As an artist it is important to understand the workings of the business, your rights and obligations.

Topics Covered: 

A.     The Basics:  
  • This interactive discussion serves as an introduction into the music business. Participants should leave this session understanding the purpose of their role and how they function in the music industry. We will cover key roles and definitions in the business such as: what is a producer, what are royalties, what does a publisher do, and so on.    

B.     The 3 R’s: 
  • Rights, Restrictions and Royalties This interactive discussion focuses on copyright protection, copyright-able works, sampling and more. Copyright law does not protect ideas in themselves; it only applies to specific and recognizable expressions of ideas. We want to make sure that artist understand this concept and know how to protect their ideas and titles.    

C.     Protect Your Performance: 
  • This interactive discussion was created to expose artist biggest profit gainer: performing. One of the greatest sources of revenue in the music industry comes from public performance payments collected and distributed by the major performing rights organizations and this course will introduce participants to these organizations.      ​
D.     Music and Minors:  
  • This interactive discussion provides the “bigger picture” to minors interested in becoming musicians. While the legal adult age is 21, many musicians break into the industry at a young age. Although a minor may not fully understand their contract; and their parents have hired agents to manage the business affairs of the artist, it is important for anyone, regardless of age, to understand at least the bare minimum of what they are getting their self into.    

E.     Contracts:  
  • This interactive discussion breaks down how the recording artist contract functions. Participants in this session will be able to understand the purpose of the contract, included costs, accounting and many other facets of the contract.    

F.     Hater’s in the Industry: 
  • This interactive discussion exposes participants to defense mechanisms as it relates to protecting their music. In the record business there are people who make a living off of the musicians’ hard work. These people are known as bootleggers and pirates. By the conclusion of this session participants will have a broader outlook on how to protect their hard work.     

G.    Career Planning: Producer, Longevity
  • This interactive discussion illustrates the role of the producer and their purpose in the music industry. Producers are responsible for getting the artist the recording they want to make. This course will explain the role of the Producer and why it is important for the artist to understand how to communicate what they want from the Producer. 

H.     Management: Business, Road, and Personal 
  • This interactive discussion illustrates the role of management and their purpose in the music industry. Artists naturally just want to make music without having to deal with the hustle and bustle of the business. Management allow the artist to do what they do best, by managing the way business is handled and setting the artist up for a successful career.
